"Well, we were only on hiatus for one week, and we missed an entire White House press secretary." Seth Meyers needs about twenty seconds to find the joke in his time away, and the segment that follows reached about 1.9 million views in its first day. That is far beyond a typical opening day for a regular Late Night upload. Its comment section was also nearly three times busier than usual, and many of the most visible comments simply welcome him back.
The missing press secretary is Katie Zacharia, who lasted five days. Meyers plays her vague answers about passing the bar, including the clip where she explains it happened "when I moved to China." Then she offers a casting tip for Saturday Night Live: "Maybe a Scarlett Johansson-type character." Meyers immediately brings Colin Jost into the joke. Jost, the Weekend Update anchor, is married to Johansson, and he was once co-head writer at SNL alongside Meyers himself.
Kimberly Guilfoyle comes next, stepping down as ambassador to Greece following claims of misconduct, and Trump's distance from her gets its own clip: "She wasn't a member of my family. She, uh, I guess dated my son a long time ago." After that come the polls, with approval down to 33 percent two weeks before the midterms, amid inflation, gas prices and the war in Iran.
The second half belongs to real estate. Meyers takes on the plan to close East Potomac Park's public golf course for a championship course. He then lines up the president praising the helipad's "unbelievable architecture reviews," a stone patio and four-inch seat cushions.
The night's other uploads moved quickly too. The Zacharia material made a fast start as a Short, and the monologue about Trump praising Melania while addressing women's health care drew well beyond its usual audience. The Closer Look saves its sharpest contrast for last: a rally promise of $5,000 checks, followed by Trump describing a Mar-a-Lago meal where $5,000 buys "one hamburger and a small dessert."
