La Marseillaise on trial: Mario Adrion finds the French anthem 'BRUTAL'

Nine uploads in seven days, from Austria's anthem to a Danish crowd and a fan's giant cigarette, brought about 16,000 new subscribers.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

French National Anthem is BRUTALFrench National Anthem is BRUTAL

"French National Anthem is BRUTAL" is Mario Adrion doing what a German comedian living in America does best: holding a piece of Europe up to the light and asking the room whether anyone else has noticed. This time it is La Marseillaise, and its famously bloody lyrics. It has passed half a million views, the biggest of the week's uploads.

The comment section turned into a French lesson. Many native speakers stepped in to explain the line about "impure blood", and most of them read it the same way: it is the blood of the commoners marching against royalty, not of some outside enemy. Others pointed out that much of Europe had joined forces against France when the song was written in 1792, which makes the mood easier to understand. A few simply suggested he hear it sung by a full stadium.

Anthems were clearly on his mind. A few days later came "Germany Stole Austria's Anthem", a nod to the old tangle in which the melody of Haydn's imperial hymn ended up as Germany's anthem. The rest of the week traveled too: a crowd in Denmark, a Jewish crowd in Germany, a fan who brought him a giant cigarette, and a day-old set called "Trump in Switzerland". The one moving fastest right now is "Latinos in Germany!", only two days old.

All told, the channel took in about 20 million views over the week, running well above its usual pace, and no stand-up channel near its size gained more. Denny love also had a strong week for new subscribers, while Hot Water Comedy Club and Slice Comedy were a little under their usual pace.

What viewers say

  • It's not like more than half of Europe teamed up to invade France at the time... Wait
  • It's a song about sacrifice, the "impure" blood is the blood of the people marching. Their blood was considered impure because they were commoners, at the time they were fighting royalty and nobles

  • No, it means we will fight until our impure blood flow in the water.
Because the impure blood is the non royal blood, so the blood of the people who were fighting during the revolution (sorry for my english I am French 😅)
