The bodyguard wins round one. Jared Padalecki's movie star, Jack Stapleton, steps off a helicopter and doubts that Leighton Meester's Hannah Brooks can protect him. Within seconds he is flat in the snow. "Guarding stars is my least favorite assignment," she says, and the trailer for Guarding Stars has its premise.

The complication comes on the way to Jack's family home in Montana. He does not want his mother to worry, so he asks Hannah to pose as his girlfriend instead of his bodyguard. Her agency colleagues watch her western makeover over a video call. His parents get the affectionate-couple act at the Stapleton Ranch, followed by horseback rides, Christmas-tree decorating and a holiday rodeo, where a "Mistletoe Cam" forces the moment the whole setup has been building toward. Later, alone at a bathroom mirror, Hannah sums it up: "This girlfriend stuff is exhausting."

The film adapts Katherine Center's bestselling novel The Bodyguard, and the trailer bills it as coming from the director of Purple Hearts, Netflix's 2022 hit romance by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum. Its tags also name Andie MacDowell and CM Punk, though the trailer does not say whom they play.

Within 14 hours the trailer had passed 820,000 views, and its comment section filled more than ten times faster than a usual first day for the channel's short uploads. Much of that talk is about television history. Viewers are delighted that Blair Waldorf has met Sam Winchester, the roles that made Meester and Padalecki CW fixtures, and a few remember Padalecki further back as Dean Forester in Gilmore Girls. Others point readers to Center's book before the November 18 release.

Netflix had another fast starter the same day. The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 trailer is drawing a similarly large early audience ahead of its October 20 debut, which puts a gritty Night City crew and a snowbound fake romance side by side on the channel's front shelf.
