"Who else was big-time football players? Raise your hand!" A boot camp drill instructor barks the question at a smiling recruit, and it sums up the premise of The Mosquito Bowl: young men who were famous on the field, starting over as Marines.

The trailer opens with a commanding officer offering no comfort. "I would love to tell you there will be no more casualties," he says. "That's not true." From there it cuts between enlistment clerks typing up last names, amphibious landings under fire and flashbacks to packed stadiums. One recruit wants to play for the New York Giants. Another just wants to "live the hell out of my life." Late in the trailer, a Marine puts it another way: "This is us sacrificing for the unborn."

The director is Peter Berg, who made Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, so football and military combat are both familiar ground for him. The tags credit Buzz Bissinger, whose nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl tells the story of a game played on Guadalcanal on Christmas Eve 1944 between two Marine regiments full of former college stars. Ray Nicholson, Jack Nicholson's son, joins Galitzine, Skarsgård and Francis among the leads.

Netflix posted five trailers and teasers the same day, including a holiday film starring Dennis Quaid and the dance-team mystery The Body. This one ran far ahead of them, with about 736,000 views in 16 hours. Its comment section has already collected more than ten times the comments a typical upload of this length gets in a full day.

The comments return again and again to Saving Private Ryan. Many viewers say the cast is their reason to watch, and quite a few were thrown by a familiar face they believe is Pat McAfee playing a drill instructor. The "unborn" line comes up repeatedly too.

The film opens in theaters October 30 and comes to Netflix on November 25.

  • This is an amazing trailer, but I would be lying if I didn’t say that I had to stop it cause I was completely taken out by seeing Pat McAfee as the drill sergeant. Lol what is he doing in this??🤣

  • Football and WW2 Marines???

What a movie premise! I hope it’s really good.
I liked the line “this is sacrificing for the unborn”… really gives you a glimpse of what those men thought they were killing and dying for. Their country, and each other, a future they might not see but helped fight to preserve.

  • While y’all are hyping up Nicholas and Bill don’t sleep on Ray Nicholson. He’s a great actor and has given solid performances in everything I’ve seen him in, across multiple genres.
  • This is giving me Saving Private Ryan vibes right there... 😭❤
