NileRed's magnet-making project comes with a powerful warning
His only upload of the week introduces a machine needed to make neodymium magnets.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
This magnet machine is scary
Making magnets requires more than finding somewhere to stick them. In "This magnet machine is scary," NileRed introduces equipment for his neodymium-magnet project that, he says, generates a magnetic field similar in strength to an MRI machine.
The danger is the pull: bring a magnetic object too close, his description explains, and it can shoot violently toward the machine's center. The upload drew roughly 183,000 views in its first six hours and is currently the channel's busiest video.
Viewers are particularly focused on a chain being pulled toward the machine, and the proximity of his fingers. Elsewhere in the comments, the science-fiction associations arrive right on schedule: Magneto gets a mention, while someone wonders where their car keys have gone. Another viewer asks what a giant magnet machine has to do with turning things into alcohol, a very NileRed sort of question.
That earlier project, "Turning air into alcohol," remains among the uploads drawing the most daily views. Its long route through collecting water and carbon dioxide, building a reactor and choosing catalysts has reached nearly 12 million views. "Mixing sodium and potassium is crazy," posted more than a year ago, is also continuing to draw attention.
Across the channel, daily views are moderately above their usual level, while the subscriber total is unchanged over the week. In the neighboring science channels, ElectroBOOM has added subscribers and SciShow is drawing a larger-than-usual daily audience. For NileRed, the new magnet equipment adds a distinctly physical hazard to a catalog where even air has already become raw material.
