'Seen and not heard': Justine Musk's dinner-table memory leads Kara Swisher's Musk week
Alex Gibney's nearly four-hour documentary MUSK opens in theaters on October 9, and Kara spent the days before it talking to its director and Elon Musk's first wife.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Justine Musk speaks out
On an ordinary day, On with Kara Swisher draws around 50,000 views. Now it is running at roughly twice that, and nearly all of the extra attention traces back to one subject: Elon Musk.
The channel built its week around "MUSK," Alex Gibney's documentary about the world's first trillionaire, which the full episode's description says runs nearly four hours. Kara sat down with Gibney and with the writer Justine Musk, Elon's first wife, who the description says has not spoken publicly in years. A one-minute preview called "Justine Musk speaks out" went up first and became the week's most watched upload. In it she recalls family dinners and a joke at Kimbal Musk's wedding, then sums up the household this way: "In the Musk family, women are in the same category as dogs and children, seen and not heard, basically." From there she moves to politics, arguing that silencing other voices is the opposite of democracy, which she calls "a conversation."
Much of the comment section is about her. Many viewers remark on how clearly she explains things, and several thank Kara for making room for her.
The full hour went up on Thursday and is moving faster than anything else on the channel. Its chapters cover the computer-generated Musk Gibney built after the real one declined to take part, Errol Musk, and Elon's turn to MAGA politics. Two teasers built on Gibney's phrase "psychologically unhinged" filled the gap before it. Ari Emanuel also stopped by for a live Los Angeles conversation about his memoir "Roll the Calls" and his advice to David Ellison on the Paramount merger. An eight-day-old Short asking whether a good billionaire exists is still finding viewers too, which fits the week neatly.
About 2,000 new subscribers arrived. Among the podcast and interview channels nearest its size, Theo Rogan Shorts is in the middle of an enormous week and The Daily Heretic is busy as well, while Kara's channel sits fourth for views gained.
