Flail mower questions meet storm preparations at Piney Grove Homestead
Brad and Deb's four uploads span field maintenance, equipment rentals, Hurricane Isaias and a personal story of faith.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Are FLAIL MOWERS Good For Anything Or Just A GIMMICK?
Thick food-plot weeds gave Brad a practical question to work through: is a flail mower worth having, or would a brush hog do the job better? That test drew the largest total audience of Piney Grove Homestead's four new uploads, reaching about 23,000 views.
"Are FLAIL MOWERS Good For Anything Or Just A GIMMICK?" puts a five-foot WoodMax mower to work and considers cutting height, the trade-offs with a rotary cutter and mowing in reverse. The comments turn into an equipment-owner conversation. Some viewers describe using flails alongside other mowers; another suggests that tractor tires flattening tall stalks could help explain missed cuts. That's a viewer's diagnosis, not an established answer.
The week's subjects then moved beyond routine maintenance. "We Rode Out Hurricane Isaias - Close Call in the Florida Panhandle" covers preparations at Brad and Deb's homestead, riding out the storm and checking damage the next morning. It attracted a larger first-day audience than the mower test and is now the busiest of the new uploads. Deb also shares her experience of a car accident and divine intervention in "I Was Put There For A Reason!"
A visit to Parish Tractor in Marianna rounds out the week with an explanation of renting larger machinery, including excavators, skid steers and trailers.
Across the library, views totaled roughly 1.5 million, a substantial week among nearby outdoors and homesteading channels. Subscribers grew, although the current daily viewing pace is below the channel's usual level. The strongest ongoing draw remains "Mud Hole To Stocking Fish In New Pond! - 3 Months in 3 Minutes!" Its compressed account of building and stocking the pond is drawing considerably more daily views than any of the new uploads.

I have an Iron Craft FRF-145 Offset Articulating Flail Mower with hammer blades. I have a 5 acre property with about a third of it wooded. I went with the flail mower because of the utility of use and tasks it could perform over a rotary cutter. I do most of my mowing with my zero turn so the flail mower does everything else I need it to. I think it's also more fun to use! 🚜😉
@beardedrockinhillbillySee it on YouTubeSome women love their tractors, too! I don’t have a flail mower yet, but I hope to get one. Maybe one for the skid steer instead of the tractor.
@CathyDickersonFireflyMillSee it on YouTubeI miss my tractor a lot. I do not live at my farm and can only get there a few times a year.
My flail mower is great too.@kdegraaSee it on YouTube

I have a Land Pride flail mower with hammer blades and after seeing that WoodMaxx, I would say the Land Pride is a much "beefier" unit comparatively. I haven't regretted getting a flail mower over a rotary mower at any point.
@MrSnivvelSee it on YouTubeI love driving our LS tractor. We have a bush hog but plan on getting a Flail mower too. I think it did a great job on your field.
@donnafreeman2915See it on YouTubeMy Land Pride rotary cutter has a reinforced steel lip on the back so it’s not damaged mowing small trees while backing up.
@rogered5499See it on YouTubeI used a flail mower for years on a city park recreation sports field and is was great because it didn't through things and was quiet at six in the morning.
@GeorgeWest-x7oSee it on YouTubeI have a Kubota F2890 with Peruzzo TEG Special 1600HD flail mower. I very rarely experience uncut stalks which I would attribute to the mower being on the front. I suggest it is your tractor tyres which are laying the long stalks down which causes your rear mounted flail mower to miss them. Selecting the optimum speed will also help get the best cut.
