Reed Timmer sends weather balloons into a hurricane's eye

Team Dominator's science mission anchors five uploads, alongside storm intercepts in Kansas and northwest Texas.

Getting into the storm is only part of Team Dominator's assignment. Getting instruments into it supplies the scientific thread running through Reed Timmer's most-watched new upload, which has reached roughly 209,000 views.

In "120 mph wind gusts hammer Team Dominator in powerful Hurricane Isaias with balloons launched," the team documents a hurricane encounter on Florida's Panhandle. Timmer's description says they launched two weather balloons, including one that climbed to 54,000 feet inside the eye. That is a rather different destination from the armored vehicles familiar to his viewers.

Two companion uploads narrow the focus to the measurements and balloon launch. Timmer reports a peak gust between Destin and Fort Walton Beach, and credits engineer @willclay25 with an all-night build that made the balloon mission possible. Together, the uploads give the instruments a place in the story alongside the storm chasers.

Kansas and Texas supplied the week's other outings: a "hybrid-nado" intercept near Kiowa in the Dominator F150, and a gustnado beneath what Timmer calls an aquamarine supercell. The Texas upload is drawing almost as many daily views as the longer hurricane video, despite its smaller total audience.

The channel added about 10,000 subscribers over seven days, although daily viewing is a little below its usual pace. Fellow weather channel Max Velocity had a substantially larger week for views; Cody'sLab and Sick Science! were quieter. For Timmer, the hurricane mission accounts for three of the five new uploads, with the balloon's journey providing the connecting thread.
