A Canadian tornado, just beyond The OTUS Project's drone
The summer flight has passed eight million views, even though the team never reached its intended destination inside the tornado.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Flying a drone RIGHT next to this tornado in Canada
Getting close was not the original goal. In "Flying a drone RIGHT next to this tornado in Canada," The OTUS Project wanted another flight inside a tornado, but the team says it could not make that happen. Its description looks back on the attempt with initial disappointment, then appreciation for what it managed to capture.
That distinction matters for OTUS: the name stands for Observations of Tornadoes by UAV Systems, and the self-funded project's purpose is to gather reliable measurements within and around tornadoes. The footage is striking, but there is a measurement mission behind the camera.
No new videos arrived this week. The Canadian upload, posted in July, remains by far the busiest of its active videos and has reached about 8.4 million views. Two other summer uploads, "Super RARE tornado sighting in Mattoon, WI" and "Flying drones INTO tornadoes 🌪️," are also drawing fresh viewing. The Mattoon description places that sighting largely in woodland, with the team seeking other perspectives on the damage path.
The channel added 1,000 subscribers over the week, although its current daily viewing is less than half its usual level. Among nearby channels of similar size, John Dolechek had the largest weekly view gain; OTUS had the next largest. For OTUS, an upload-free week has left the Canadian attempt as the main point of discovery: a flight that fell short of entering the tornado, without disappearing from view.
