The Elevate Report reads Alberta's vote as a demand for autonomy
Its fast-starting Short argues that remaining in Canada and wanting less federal intervention are not contradictory positions.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 66,203 views a day, 7.8 times a normal first day on this channel (8,508).
Carney Wants You To IGNORE THIS
Voting to stay in Canada does not mean endorsing Ottawa's role in Alberta's affairs. That is the distinction at the center of The Elevate Report's political commentary Short, "Carney Wants You To IGNORE THIS".
The upload drew roughly 53,000 views in fifteen hours, already well beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts. It follows another Alberta-focused upload in which the channel also frames the referendum as a demand for greater provincial autonomy.
The Short begins by acknowledging the vote to remain in Canada, then turns to the other questions on the ballot. Displaying result graphics, the commentator says Albertans backed eight of the nine other proposals. He highlights questions concerning immigration, provincial court justices, the federal Senate and the priority of provincial laws.
His argument is that coverage focused on the rejection of separation misses those additional choices. He interprets them as a message to Mark Carney: voters want to remain Canadian while giving Alberta more control over its own affairs.
