Kristian Harloff remembers playing Street Fighter at a pizza shop in Queens. The new movie's tournament scenes brought some of that feeling back. What surrounded them did not.
Recording outside the theater, Harloff says the adaptation spends too much time on side stories instead of concentrating on the tournament. His complaint is not simply that the movie is silly: it is that serious drama and campy humor keep pulling it in different directions, with jokes that do not land for him.
"However, the rest of the movie does not work for me at all," he says after describing the nostalgic appeal.
That immediate verdict drew roughly 114,000 views in its first day, nearly seven times the usual opening for his regular videos. The comment section was similarly busier than usual.
There are exceptions to his criticism. Cody Rhodes gets a few laughs, some fights entertain him, and Andrew Schulz earns his strongest performance praise. Harloff is less impressed by how the movie uses David Dastmalchian. By the end, he recommends waiting for streaming.
The comments turn toward what a Street Fighter adaptation should actually deliver. One viewer wants a live-action version of the animated movie; others argue for seeing this film and making up their own minds. Another recalls childhood sessions with X-Men vs Street Fighter, a reminder that Harloff's pizza-shop memories are not the only arcade history accompanying this release.
