Veritasium's weight-loss question has an answer in every breath
A street-interview Short turns a familiar fitness question into a chemistry lesson, with a detour through gym fees.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
When you lose weight where does it go?
Sweat, water, or the money spent at the gym? The pedestrians in Veritasium's only new upload offer an entertaining assortment of destinations for lost weight. Then someone lands on the answer the interviewer is looking for: breathing.
"When you lose weight where does it go?" explains that most of the mass of fat broken down by the body leaves as carbon dioxide through the lungs. An animation connects inhaled oxygen with exhaled carbon dioxide, making an everyday breath part of a surprisingly tangible accounting exercise. The Short also promotes Veritasium's own trivia board game, Elements of Truth.
It has collected roughly 1.2 million views. In the comments, viewers turn the explanation into jokes about breathing through an entire gym session, while others admit they would have guessed heat. One recalls the channel's older explanation of trees taking in carbon dioxide: the same molecule, traveling in the other direction.
Across the channel, viewing is slower than usual today, at less than half its typical daily pace, while the subscriber total was unchanged over the week. Its weekly views sit between the larger totals at Vsauce and Kurzgesagt and the somewhat smaller total at NileRed, friendly company for a week with just one fresh upload.
The busiest regular video remains "The Insane Engineering of Fiber Optics," now approaching 12 million views. Presented by Henry van Dyck and directed by Sulli Yost, it follows the journey from limited copper phone lines to remarkably pure glass, including a visit to a fiber manufacturing plant. The Enigma documentary is also continuing to draw viewers, keeping glassmaking and codebreaking busy alongside the new lesson in breathing.
