Tesla's 'flying' Roadster leaves the ramp behind
VideoFromSpace's Tesla-supplied footage has viewers puzzling over the curved ramp as much as the airborne car.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 724,068 views a day, 66 times a normal first day on this channel (10,936).
Wow! Tesla 'Flying' Roadster with SpaceX Thrusters 🚀 #tesla #spacex #roadster #flying #space #shorts
The rocket plumes are familiar territory for VideoFromSpace. The sports car producing them is rather less usual.
Its Roadster Short opens with a nighttime climb up a huge curved ramp, then shows the vehicle moving horizontally through the air, trailing thruster plumes. Later, it jumps over a semi-truck and a car. The footage comes from Tesla's unveiling at SpaceX's McGregor facility in Texas, where the company presented thrusters designed to let the Roadster fly in short bursts.
The Short drew more than 600,000 views before its first full day, far beyond the channel's usual start for that format. A separate, longer upload, "Tesla Unveils 'Flying' Roadster with SpaceX Thrusters," has also passed three million views.
For a channel whose enduring hits answer everyday astronaut questions about crying, cooking spinach and washing hair in space, this is a different kind of practical puzzle. One prominent comment asks how the car climbs the curved ramp without falling. Others imagine skipping the parking garage and heading straight for a roof space, or reach for Knight Rider comparisons.
The clip packs its jumps and aerial flips into less than a minute. After all that spectacle, an unidentified off-screen speaker supplies a notably modest assessment: "Well, it worked."
