Rebuilding Cope's Camarasaurus with Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong

Steven Bellettini returns to an early life-size reconstruction, with viewers discussing what happens when better bones change the picture.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

No one expected sauropod necks to be like that...No one expected sauropod necks to be like that...

"No one expected sauropod necks to be like that..." continues a conversation about paleontologist Edward Cope's life-size Camarasaurus supremus reconstruction. It was Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong's only new upload, reaching about 42,000 views and giving Steven Bellettini another way to explore a very fitting subject for this channel: how a dinosaur picture becomes wrong, and how it gets corrected.

The replies are interested in the process as much as the animal. Viewers discuss the gap between getting a skeleton right and understanding its lifestyle, the limited fossil material early researchers had to work with, and whether their own childhood dinosaur drawings deserve a little more credit. One especially thoughtful thread treats speculation as a starting point that can improve when new evidence arrives.

The neck video is also the channel's busiest for daily views right now. Behind it, "Evolutions of Dinosaur Flight - The Many Ways to Almost Make a Bird" explores the competing routes from ground or treetops toward flight, drawing on animals including Archaeopteryx and Microraptor. That longer lesson is approaching a quarter-million views.

Across the channel, weekly viewing totaled roughly 82,000, almost identical to Event Horizon's week. Astrum Extra had a much larger viewing week among nearby science channels. Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong's subscriber count held steady, while its current daily viewing is below its usual pace.

Cope also connects the new upload to "Well on the one hand...," another active video about reconstructing Dryptosaurus with little comparative material. Familiar wrong toys may be Bellettini's calling card, but early scientific best guesses give him plenty to untangle too.

What viewers say

  • I like how his reconstruction went from “accurate lifestyle, wrong skeleton” to “accurate skeleton, wrong lifestyle”

  • I'm enjoying this look into _really_ early reconstructions of dinosaurs, when science had only described a handful of bones for each dinosaur order and workers were still trying to guess what kind of terrible beasts they were looking at. Today we have a pretty decent understanding of what kinds of dinosaurs existed, but Cope and Marsh and their generation simply didn't.

  • Feels liberating to know that my paleoart as a kid was at least on par with one of the fathers of paleontology... 😂

  • The lesson I would take is that speculation is better than none and can lead to better understanding and therefore better speculation.
With limited information, they simply used what they knew and explained it the best they could before gaining more information and correcting.
  • What would be really interesting is if we could take a paleontologist back into the Cretaceous period and see if they could actually recognize any dinosaurs based off what we can reconstruct today.
  • I think its cool that he didnt really have a lot to go off of, and was still trying to be as accurate as possible
