'I'm almost making a movie in my mind': Maggie Gyllenhaal's audio Van Helsing
In a short clip from Audible's 'Dracula' recording booth, the cast explains why the vampire hunter is now a woman who fights with her mind, and that change is what the comments are about.
Why this story? The video is running at 50,932 views a day, 27 times its usual pace (1,911).
Maggie Gyllenhaal Plays Van Helsing in 'Dracula' on Audible
Maggie Gyllenhaal stands at a microphone, script in hand, trading lines with a castmate. Then she explains what draws her to a story told only in sound: "You decide what the room looks like, and you decide what her dress looks like, and you decide what her hair looks like." A moment later she adds: "I'm almost making a movie in my mind."
The clip is under a minute long. It is a promotional short for Audible's new adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and its subject is the production's boldest change. Van Helsing, the Dutch professor who hunts the Count in the novel, is a woman here, played by Gyllenhaal. One of the team says the decision brought fresh energy to the character. Another describes her as determined to outsmart Dracula, which turns the story into "an intellectual battle as opposed to a physical one." The description sums up her role in a line: her wit is her weapon.
The clip went up a week ago and had a quiet first day, then suddenly drew more than 50,000 views in one day. The channel's launch film for the series picked up speed at the same time. An earlier upload under the identical title has barely been noticed.
The few comments under the video are almost all about one thing: the casting choice and the gender swap, with several viewers arguing that a classic should stay as Stoker wrote it.
The cast is a strong one for an audiobook. The launch film lists Jonathan Bailey, Ella Purnell, Aimee Lou Wood, Louis Partridge, David Jonsson, Johnny Flynn and Lesley Manville alongside Gyllenhaal, and the dark teaser that opened the campaign has passed four million views. Gyllenhaal knows the gothic well behind the camera too: she wrote and directed The Bride!, her film built on the story of Frankenstein's bride.
