Bootleg superheroes take ComicTropes from comic panels to toy shelves
Five stories explore the unusual ways unofficial Marvel, DC and indie comic-book toys reach collectors.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
INSANE Stories About Bootleg Comic Book Toys
ComicTropes stepped into action-figure territory with its only new upload, “INSANE Stories About Bootleg Comic Book Toys,” now approaching 50,000 views. The collection explores designers and manufacturers putting their own strange spins on familiar superheroes, a sideways extension of the channel's interest in how comics get made.
Viewers have practical suggestions for an armed, crawling Spider-Man: remove the weapon and the pose would make much more sense. Others bring memories of dollar-store imitation Ninja Turtles, mismatched superhero packaging and seeing their own toy designs return with alterations. The discussion turns the episode into something of an unofficial toy-aisle reunion.
The bootleg collection is currently the channel's busiest video, followed by “The CRAZY Rules of the Legion of Super-Heroes,” whose far-future team gets tangled in age limits, marriage rules and even tax codes. The Valiant Comics publishing history remains active too, covering its changing owners and shared universe.
Subscribers were unchanged over the week, while today's viewing pace is about a third of usual. Nearby, Battle Report - Games Night is having a busier-than-usual viewing day; Pixel Dan is quieter. For ComicTropes, the freshest conversation belongs to toys that don't quite follow the superhero rulebook.

What viewers say
They could just remove the weapon and make it a crawling Spiderman toy, which would make sense for the character. 😂
@emperormegaman3856See it on YouTubeI often see Superman in a Avengers toy packaging when I am on vacation in Turkiye.
@belgiumcomics2537See it on YouTubeLol. Dollar stores were where you saw them back in the 90s pre-internet. I remember my mother buying me what I thought was a Leonardo/TMNT toy but it was just a green turtle in a karate gi with cheap paper-thin grey swords. I was only 5 or 6 years of age but wise enough knew it wasn't the real thing.

Honestly, if you removed the gun, you could probably make the argument that Spiderman was just crawling across a horizontal wall.
@Morgil27See it on YouTubeI just left a plastics molding job and I was asking a coworker where they think the old TMNT molds are now lol
@MissingNoFilmsSee it on YouTubeGreat video! I watch a lot of action figure YT videos, so it was a nice surprise to see ComicTropes wade in on the subject
@knyght27See it on YouTubeI used to design squeaking dog toys that looked like random goofy animals. Id walk into pet stores all the time and see dog toys that clearly used the molds I designed with random changes.
@dennisrivard2769See it on YouTubePerfect video for a relaxed Sunday morning! A topic I was aware of but knew almost nothing about! Thanks so much for the education and entertainment!
