'Pulling teeth': Cedric Ceballos on getting Charles Barkley to practice

The former Suns forward's story on All The Smoke has viewers reopening an old argument about Barkley and the championship ring he never won.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 36,588 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (3,358).

Barkley skipping practice still sells. Cedric Ceballos sat down with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on All The Smoke, and DraftKings cut his memories of Phoenix into a Short titled "Charles Barkley Barely Practiced And Still Dominated 😂". It came close to 40,000 views in its first day, around ten times what a Short on this channel usually manages.

Ceballos knew the routine up close. He was a Sun when Barkley arrived from Philadelphia in 1992, the season Barkley was named league MVP and took Phoenix to the NBA Finals, where the Suns lost to Michael Jordan's Bulls. According to the description, Ceballos says getting Barkley to practice was like "pulling teeth," and none of it kept Chuck from being one of the best players in the world during that run.

The comments came in about ten times faster than on a usual first day, and they are less about the joke than about what it might have cost. Many viewers ask whether the missed practices are why Barkley never won a title. One popular reply points instead to the roster around him and reminds everyone of the MVP. Others reach straight for Allen Iverson and his famous press conference about practice, and a few put Shaquille O'Neal in the same category of raw talent.

The Short ran ahead of the rest of the channel's day. Next behind it were two Dan Le Batard Show clips on talk that the Knicks might trade Karl-Anthony Towns.

  • Not practicing wasn’t the reason he didn’t win a championship. A lack of quality players on his team was the reason he didn’t win a championship. But he did win MVP of the league.
