Finebaum floats AI referees after BYU-Notre Dame clock controversy

ESPN College Football's fast-starting reaction clip moves from Notre Dame's playoff predicament to a half-joking technological fix for officiating.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 112,473 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (10,386).

Paul Finebaum gives the Big 12 credit before giving college football's officiating a much harsher review. The conference, he says, at least offered transparency over the clock controversy surrounding BYU's win against Notre Dame.

Then comes his proposed replacement for the humans: "Just let AI officiate the games."

It is a half-joking finish to a discussion that begins with serious consequences for Notre Dame's playoff hopes. ESPN College Football's "Finebaum's BYU vs. Notre Dame reaction" drew about 65,000 views in ten hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for a Short.

The host raises the disputed seconds and argues that clock mistakes need fixing. Finebaum broadens the criticism beyond that finish, and beyond college football, to include the NFL. "I've never seen a worse year for officiating," he says.

Viewers are not simply debating whether another second belonged on the clock. Several point to other calls they believe were missed against both teams; others question how precisely the clock started on the final play. A recurring argument is that the ending should not be judged separately from everything that preceded it.

ESPN's separate "BYU takes down Notre Dame" Short also drew an unusually large early audience. For a longer treatment, Greg McElroy's Week 7 takeaways devotes a chapter to his argument that BYU took away Notre Dame's margin for error.

What viewers say

  • BYU had a touchdown called back on a very controversial call, one second or one bad call is not the deciding factor. It all equaled out. Either team could have won, it was a great game. I’m a BYU fan but I would have accepted either way.
  • A second is debatable as the clock is not exact when started when it’s hiked so a second is marginal and unless we have a non person entity starting and stopping clock precisely we can’t complain about the second at the end.

  • The refs were not the reason for the score, missed throws, fumble, bad play calls, poor preparation were reasons.
