Monsal Hill makes GCN's long drive a short, steep affair
Ollie's Peak District outing includes a catch-up with Malcolm Elliott, while Makari Espe joins a very different gravel challenge.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Why We Drove 10 Hours For A 1-Minute Race!
The climb is the attraction. GCN's most-watched new upload, "Why We Drove 10 Hours For A 1-Minute Race!", trades a long journey for a very short stretch of road: Monsal Hill, with gradients reaching 17%.
Ollie takes on the Peak District event, with equipment tweaks, warm-up strategy and the physiology of a brief, all-out effort surrounding the ride. There's also a catch-up with Malcolm Elliott, whose appearance has viewers recalling his racing days. Elsewhere in the comments, riders exchange their own hill-climb memories, including one wonderfully candid account of finishing last. Several want the whole GCN presenting team to make the trip next time.
The Monsal film has reached roughly 394,000 views and remains the channel's busiest upload by daily viewing. But this was also a week for stretching the distance: "We Took A Gravel Rookie On A 100km Ride" brings Canadian creator Makari Espe onto the Henley 100 FKT route, with steep climbs, off-road trails and a mid-ride food stop. It had the stronger first day of those two outings, though Monsal has since accumulated more views.
Gravel gets its debating slot too. Reporting from Australia, Dan and Si use the GCN Show to ask whether dedicated gravel specialists have a distinct place alongside road and multidiscipline professionals. That episode completes the trio drawing the most daily views right now.
Across ten uploads, GCN collected about four million views over the week. Subscribers stayed unchanged, while daily viewing is modestly above its usual level. Nearby in the broader sports neighborhood, Rick Shiels Golf is running close to its normal daily audience and Bryson DeChambeau added subscribers. GCN's own week offered a neat contrast: a gravel beginner testing endurance, and Ollie compressing his effort into one punishing hill.

What viewers say
I'd struggle to beat Oli's time going downhill! Great effort.
@MPH-iq5mdSee it on YouTubeWhat a wild event!! Need the whole team up there next time. Also Zwift should make this a climb.
@EddieDBamaSee it on YouTubeMy claim to fame is coming last in this event.
I notoriously take 25v minutes to warmup properly. And on any climb, even mid-ride, I need 5 minutes to get up to climbing power.
So yes, I came last by a long way.@TesterAnimal1See it on YouTube

Always dreaded the thought that Malcolm Elliott could turn up at the Vets races I did in that area.
@johnstracSee it on YouTubeChapeau to the guy catching the exhausted riders at the top ... great technique, I reckon he's done that before
@stephenbrook65See it on YouTubeWell done, Ollie. Great effort. As a former winner of my local hill-climb (quite a few years ago now) I appreciated Malcolm's comment about how you have to be young and foolish to give your all in hill-climbs. I'm off the pace these days, physically and mentally, but I still enjoy climbs and watching others challenge themselves against gravity!
@phoenixinthetrees1446See it on YouTubeBrilliant video and fantastic effort Ollie, very inspiring too! Love the fact that this event is open to anyone on any bike.
@cjmwritesSee it on YouTubeWhat a beautiful event. Now I want a history lesson on British hill climbing tradition!!
