Shane van Gisbergen stops to help Scott McLaughlin after rollover
Kayo Sports revisits a 2019 Supercars moment in which checking on another driver came first.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 57,973 views a day, 30 times a normal first day on this channel (1,908).
Fantastic Sportsmanship 🤝
Scott McLaughlin answers his engineer from inside an overturned car: "I'm okay, no, I'm so sorry." The reply is to take it easy and wait for the marshals. Then Shane van Gisbergen pulls up beside the wreck and gets out.
That stop is the heart of Kayo Sports' archival Short, "Fantastic Sportsmanship 🤝", which revisits McLaughlin's heavy Gold Coast crash nearly seven years later. It drew about 58,000 views in its first day, roughly thirty times the channel's usual start for a Short.
The broadcast uses split-screen to keep McLaughlin's cockpit and the scene outside in view. His damaged Shell V-Power car rests against the barrier while the radio exchange establishes that he is conscious and responding.
Van Gisbergen leaves his own car and climbs up to check on McLaughlin as marshals and medical crew arrive. They then help McLaughlin out of the overturned vehicle.
Kayo's title points to the gesture rather than the impact. The defining image is a fellow driver stepping out of his cockpit to make sure McLaughlin is okay.
