England is the ambition. Jonathan Trott is leading the Lions, but he tells Stick to Cricket that coaching England's Test side remains his goal.
Joining Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook, David Lloyd and Darren Gough, Trott gets into what that ambition requires: clear plans, knowing which players you want and understanding how to get the best from them. Recalling his interview for the England job, he stresses how much of a touring team should already be settled before departure.
The episode has drawn roughly 45,000 views in 21 hours, well beyond The Overlap Cricket's usual first-day audience. Comments have also reached four times the usual first-day total, with several viewers remembering the dependable batter they would like to see in England's lineup again.
Trott's coaching stories offer another perspective on familiar players. He remembers Harry Brook from the under-19 setup: "He was the most talented under-19 player I'd seen." Later, he praises Rashid Khan's commitment to Afghanistan despite the opportunities available in franchise cricket.
For the Lions, development doesn't mean treating results as incidental. "When we go to the West Indies, I want us to go there and I want us to win," Trott says. He also remembers his own Lions tours as hugely beneficial to his development.
This is a sponsored podcast episode, with the usual table chatter intact: Lloyd even takes a phone call during the recording. But Trott supplies its clearest closing perspective on moving from player to coach: "I'll never forget how hard cricket was, or is."

A lot of people say England need another KP or another Stokes: what England really need is another Jonathan Trott, a dependable top/mid order batter who can steady things if the top wickets go quickly. That's not in the nature of the likes of Brook and company at this moment in time.
