Gold bars become HD Guy's unit for military spending
The channel's only new upload translates munition costs into gold, using prices cited from U.S. military budget documents.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Cost in Units of Gold Bars
What does a missile cost when dollars stop being the unit? HD Guy's answer is gold, adding another unlikely measuring stick to a channel built around making cost and scale easier to picture.
"Cost in Units of Gold Bars" was the week's only upload, reaching about 42,000 views. Its description bases the comparison on a retail troy ounce of gold and cites U.S. military procurement documents for munition prices. The distinction matters: a gold bar isn't one fixed size, and viewers are already asking about the weight behind the comparison.
Other viewers propose their own units, from diamonds and graphics processors to the hours a minimum-wage worker would need to earn the money. That last suggestion changes the question from how much something costs to how much working time it represents.
Gold is the new arrival, but graphics cards remain the channel's biggest daily draw. "Cost in Units of RTX 5090" has passed 32 million views and accounts for well over half of HD Guy's current daily viewing. "Cost in Units of Monster Energy" supplies a more everyday comparison, while "LandSpace has entered the chat" takes the cost-and-scale premise into reusable rockets.
Across the library, HD Guy added nearly three million views this week and gained subscribers modestly. Its current daily viewing is also above its usual pace. Among nearby curiosity channels, Reddit Report had a much larger viewing week, while Chilluminati Podcast was comparatively quiet. HD Guy's distinctive contribution remains the measuring stick: a military price tag expressed through something viewers can actually imagine buying.
