Jeff Geerling's "Pi 5 killer" isn't easy to get
His Radxa Dragon Q8B review pairs a promise of faster hardware with less glamorous questions about availability and installing an operating system.
Why this story? The whole channel is running at 681,033 views a day, 7.6 times a normal day (89,387).
A faster little computer is tempting. A faster little computer you can actually buy and get running is another matter, and Jeff Geerling makes that distinction central to his latest review.
"Qualcomm made a Pi 5 killer. Good luck getting one." has drawn nearly 900,000 views since its October 9 release. Alongside it, Geerling's channel added about 680,000 views in a day, more than seven times its usual daily pace.
The board in question is the Radxa Dragon Q8B. Geerling describes it as more than twice as fast as the Raspberry Pi 5, with twice the input/output connectivity in a package only slightly larger. The trade-offs, he says, are a somewhat higher price and difficulty finding one.
But the review isn't just a shopping problem followed by a benchmark chart. Its opening sections tackle choosing an operating system and getting through the first boot before moving into performance tests. Later, Geerling turns to BIOS, UEFI and Linux installation images: the practical details between impressive hardware and a useful computer.
That makes a different companion to his September upload about Raspberry Pi firmware restricting RAM upgrades. Here, the question is what an alternative offers, and how much work comes with the extra speed.
