Marques Brownlee checks the fine print behind Tesla's flying Roadster

His reaction ends at his own reservation agreement, while Apple's folding iPhone supplies two more uploads.

Things we can learn from the video

Press to jump

  1. 4:48Brownlee separates the reported Roadster lineup into Base, Performance, Thrust and Rocket versions.
  2. 5:13The Performance version uses fan-assisted downforce, a principle Brownlee compares with the McMurtry Spéirling.
  3. 9:23The thruster-equipped versions use compressed-air tanks, bringing packaging and engineering complications.
  4. 14:17Brownlee questions safety, street legality and the feasibility of bringing the extreme versions to customers.
  5. 21:20His reservation agreement says Tesla cannot guarantee when, or if, the car will be delivered.

The spectacle needs unpacking. In "The NEW Tesla Roadster: My Honest Reaction," Marques Brownlee moves from footage of a car leaping with thrusters to a much less airborne object: the delivery clause in his reservation agreement.

Along the way, he separates the reported versions of the redesigned Roadster, explains its fan-assisted downforce and examines the compressed-air tanks behind the thruster-equipped models. The demonstration is real engineering spectacle, in his telling, but that doesn't settle questions about safety, public-road use or whether the promised car will ship. Near the end, he reads the agreement's warning that Tesla cannot guarantee when, or even if, delivery will happen.

The reaction is the most-watched of his three uploads this week, approaching 12 million views. Viewers have supplied their own practical and decidedly impractical applications: insurance worries, a SpongeBob-style vertical road and a rocket-thrust joke comparing the refill wait to recharging a social battery. Others spotted the iPhone Duo camera footage or enjoyed the crossover with Brownlee's Auto Focus channel.

Apple supplies the week's other big subject. "iPhone Duo Review: First Generation Fun!" has already drawn nearly six million views, with chapters covering hardware, the app situation and what the folding phone does well. Apple provided the review device. The accompanying "ASMR iPhone Duo Unboxing" offers a smaller detail to chew on: only two things come in the box. Those two uploads now account for the channel's strongest daily momentum.

Overall viewing is running well above Brownlee's usual daily pace, though his subscriber total was unchanged over the week. Nearby in tech, Kyle Krueger also had a substantial viewing week, while Unbox Therapy's daily activity is quieter than usual. For Brownlee, the range is unusually broad: a phone that folds, a car that jumps and fine print that brings everything back to earth.

  • 3 seconds of rocket thrust followed by 7 hours of refilling the tank. Honestly, it sounds a lot like my social battery.
