Prep-school chaos gives MTV's VMAs a long afterlife

Where do you go for an MTV catch-up when nothing new lands? The VMAs offer a particularly lively answer: GENER8ION and Yung Lean's "STORM" performance remains the channel's most active upload.

MTV describes the set as the pair's US television debut, bringing the song's prep-school chaos to the awards stage with a dance crew. Yung Lean, the Swedish rapper whose early internet breakthrough included "Ginseng Strip 2002," makes an intriguing presence in that school-uniform world. The performance is drawing more than three times the daily views of LISA's "SaWaDiKa," the next most active upload.

The awards catch-up also includes Madonna's medley with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx: different pop generations sharing a performance rather than simply sharing a bill.

Across the channel, the week brought about 6.4 million views, almost the same weekly audience as BBC Radio 1. Atlantic Records had a substantially busier week, while Vevo was quieter. MTV's subscriber count stayed unchanged, and daily viewing is running well below its usual pace.

For MTV, the upload break leaves a specific performance doing the most work: "STORM," more than two weeks after its arrival.
