Why giant pandas eat bamboo: Pins Guy's 'When evolution only goes halfway'

The week's single animation passed 1.8 million views in six days, and its comment section is busy correcting the script on bears.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

When evolution only goes halfwayWhen evolution only goes halfway

Pins Guy posted one animation this week, and it picked a famously odd animal: the giant panda, a bear built for meat that lives almost entirely on bamboo. "When evolution only goes halfway" went up on Saturday, opened with close to 380,000 views on its first day and has since passed 1.8 million.

The comments have turned into a biology seminar. The most liked one gently fixes two details, pointing out that bamboo is nearly all of a panda's diet rather than every bite of it, and that brown bears are omnivores, not pure carnivores. Plenty of others pile onto the same point about bears, and many more simply marvel at how many hours a panda has to spend chewing. One viewer describes the animal as a mix of a cow, a bear and a manatee, which is not the worst summary.

The panda is not carrying the channel alone. "When humans like something way too much!", posted three weeks ago, has gone past ten million views and still draws nearly as many a day as the new one. A September video about ancient animals wiped out by people keeps a slower pace behind them both.

Overall it was a calmer week than usual, with daily views running at about half the channel's normal pace and roughly 3,000 new subscribers. Among similar story and curiosity channels, Rako is having a very large week, while Faded Mystery and FactAtlasHD keep busy too.

What viewers say

  • Pandas are basically a cow if they had a baby with a bear and a manatee
  • 16 hours of EATING just for the energy of Next Meal..😭🥀

  • Bamboo doesn’t quite make up the panda’s entire diet, but it does make up 99% of it, which is very close.

Also, a brown bear isn’t a carnivore, but an omnivore: it does eat berries.

  • Panda can't taste animal flesh and bone, cat can't taste sweets
  • Nah man that bear just chose a vegan diet and evolved
  • I hope humans don’t start craving sweets as much as pandas crave bamboo!

  • Fun fact: bears r omnivores because they also eat berries and honey while also eating fish.
