Tesla's Roadster sprint leaves presenters waiting for the time

The Verge's clip pairs a claimed sub-second acceleration run with a delayed readout, while viewers ask about braking and road legality.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 347,144 views a day, 31 times a normal first day on this channel (11,112).

The car finishes first. Getting its acceleration time takes rather longer.

In The Verge's Tesla-supplied presentation footage, a presenter asks for maximum performance, and a white Roadster shoots down the test track. Back onstage, the requests for a live time keep coming. There is time to discuss rocket thrusters before Elon Musk jokes about an implausibly quick initial readout.

Eventually, the presenters and Musk announce a 0-60 mph time of 0.81 seconds. That is the result reported at Tesla's demonstration, not an independent road test.

The Short drew roughly 350,000 views in its first day, more than thirty times The Verge's usual Shorts start. Its comment section was also far busier than usual, with viewers asking whether the car would be street legal and why the demonstration did not show its stopping performance. Others imagine the awkwardness of sitting behind it at a red light, or wonder whether the acceleration works with the air conditioning on.

The sprint is part of a broader Roadster burst on the channel. Separate Shorts showing the announcement and a "kickflip" also drew unusually large audiences. Alongside the spectacle, The Verge posted "Will Tesla's new Roadster ship?", shifting from what the demonstration car can do to whether buyers will get one.
