JPEG XL gets its close-up on ThioJoe

His image-format explainer joins a domain-hijacking breakdown in a two-upload week.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

The NEW JPEG is HereThe NEW JPEG is Here

"The NEW JPEG is Here" takes a familiar file type into less familiar territory: JPEG XL, lossless conversion and the question of whether browsers and apps will make room for it. ThioJoe's explainer has reached roughly 578,000 views, the largest audience for either of his new uploads this week.

The useful wrinkle is compatibility. Alongside the format's advantages, Joe includes a test page, Windows support and a comparison with AVIF. A smaller image file is appealing; being able to open it wherever you need it is another matter. Viewers are extending that discussion into game-engine support, progressive image loading and even the name: one points out that "XL" sounds like a promise of bigger files rather than smaller ones.

His other new upload, "Google's Domains Got Hacked," follows domain hijackings involving Google and other companies. The chapter list distinguishes who was compromised from whose domains were affected, then works through registries, certificates and Google's response. It drew a smaller audience than the JPEG explainer.

Across the channel, daily views are running at about twice their usual level, while subscribers were unchanged over the week. The Verge is also seeing an above-usual daily audience among nearby tech channels; Dave2D is having a quieter spell.

JPEG XL is currently bringing in the most daily views of ThioJoe's uploads. Elsewhere on his shelf, the Minecraft Short "Modders have lost their minds 💀" remains active, while his Windows 11 annual-update walkthrough keeps finding viewers for its Start menu changes, side-mounted taskbar and power-user features.

  • As a game dev I hope engines get support for this format, because this could somewhat help build sizes. I'll definitely start using this though
