Wood to steel: Yorkshire Car Restoration solves BMW gullwing hinges
Mat Armstrong's E24 needs doors that move sideways before swinging upward, and the revised mechanism now works on a test jig.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Building INSANE GULLWING Doors for Mat Armstrong’s BMW E24
A door that simply swings upward won't do for this BMW. The E24's shape demands a sideways movement first, giving Yorkshire Car Restoration an engineering puzzle rather than an ordinary hinge job.
The channel's only new upload, "Building INSANE GULLWING Doors for Mat Armstrong's BMW E24", takes that puzzle from a revised wooden prototype into steel. As the team builds the door frame and roof section, a problem with the original hinge design sends them back to the drawing board. Laser-cut wood lets them check the new movement before committing to metal. The steel mechanism then works on the test jig, an important distinction: this is a successful test, not yet a finished installation on the car.
The video has passed half a million views and is comfortably the channel's busiest upload for daily viewing. In the comments, viewers repeatedly mention the father-and-son collaboration and the dad's expression. One jokes that Ryan may never stop opening and closing the door at the bench; others pick out the background dance music as an unexpectedly club-ready accompaniment to fabrication.
The earlier E24 episode, which introduced the sideways-then-upward problem, is also drawing viewers. Elsewhere in the workshop catalog, the SubaRancho combines Jonny Smith's Talbot Matra Rancho body with Subaru Impreza WRX underpinnings, bringing front-wing fit, seat-belt mounting and a collapsed wheel bearing into the same build.
Yorkshire Car Restoration added about 3,000 subscribers over the week, with daily viewing currently above its usual level. Its weekly views were close to The Shmuseum's, while Porsche from Samuel had a much larger viewing week. For this channel, the useful milestone is smaller and more tangible: a custom hinge idea has become a working steel mechanism.
