"The nation is in mourning for those brave members of our armed forces whom we have lost," Prime Minister Mark Carney says, standing at a podium in front of Canadian flags.
His address, posted by CityNews, confirms that a fast-moving fire swept through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. Four service members died, and "dozens more are seriously wounded." Carney says he has asked that flags on all federal buildings fly at half-mast, and that a fuller briefing from senior officials and ministers on the ground would follow later that afternoon.
He describes federal and provincial officials working together, including his conversations with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. He thanks military and civilian crews, first responders, STARS air ambulance, medical staff and the people of the local community. Those affected, he says, included reservists and members of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He closes with a commitment to the families, to the recovery of the injured and to the wider armed forces: "And now Canada serves them."
The recording passed 75,000 views within eleven hours, far beyond the start a regular CityNews video usually gets. The channel's earlier Short on the deaths and injuries also ran well ahead of its usual pace. A later CityNews report, by Joel Mendelson, adds what officials said about the cause: the fire started in a training area and spread quickly in extreme wind. In the comments under Carney's address, the question many viewers keep returning to is how the fire began.
Alberta was already the focus of national attention for another reason. CityNews' newest report from the province pairs the Wainwright deaths with Monday's referendum vote.

The numbers
The prime minister's address drew a first-day audience many times larger than a usual CityNews upload, on a day when much of the channel's coverage centered on Wainwright.
