Lung cancer diagnosis puts Pope Leo's audiences on hold for a week
CP24's brief report pairs the Vatican's announcement with footage of the Pope arriving at a hospital in Rome, where part of his right lung was removed.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 79,884 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (6,606).
Pope Leo diagnosed with lung cancer: Vatican
"The Vatican says Pope Leo has been diagnosed with lung cancer," the CP24 anchor begins, and the report needs well under a minute to say the rest.
The footage shows the Pope arriving at a hospital in Rome for what the anchor calls "a procedure to remove a growth from his lung," with security staff around him and a small crowd holding up phones to film. According to the video's description, surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung on Tuesday. The anchor adds that Leo spoke about his health during his Sunday noon prayer, and closes with the practical consequence: all of his audiences are canceled for at least the next week.
The Short is moving far faster than the Toronto channel's usual Shorts, with about 36,000 views in its first seven hours. Its comment section is busier too, already roughly three times a typical full first day. Most of those comments are get-well wishes and prayers, a few of them in Spanish.
It arrives on a day when the rest of CP24's uploads stay close to home: a tightening mayoral race between Olivia Chow and Brad Bradford, cyclists protesting the removal of the Bloor Street bike lanes, and Stelco's planned layoffs in Ontario. The channel's overall daily views are below their usual level, which makes the report from Rome stand out all the more.
