"Our nation is going to need you": Britain's Army chief prepares soldiers and citizens alike

Army Chief warns Britons must prepare to make sacrifices for war
"Army Chief warns Britons must prepare to make sacrifices for war" is a Short of barely a minute and a half on BFBS Forces News. In it, General Sir Roly Walker, the Chief of the General Staff, stands outdoors in uniform with a microphone and speaks to the soldiers gathered around him.
He starts with them. "You didn't know this, but our nation is going to need you," he says. Then he widens the frame. There was a time, he says, when the country did not want to imagine needing its soldiers to fight a war. Soon, political leaders will begin "a frank conversation" with the public.
That conversation, in Walker's telling, has a clear aim: "They're going to try and explain to our citizens that our citizens have got to consent to sacrifices to prioritise defence and security." Civilians, he adds, "too, need to play a part," and they will need to back the troops in the job only soldiers do: "to take the fight to the enemy." The clip does not say what those sacrifices would be.
The theme has a recent history. In 2024, his predecessor, General Sir Patrick Sanders, described Britons as a "pre-war generation" and spoke of the need to prepare a citizen army.
The clip passed 44,000 views in its first nine hours. The comments came in far faster: more than fifty times the channel's usual first day for a Short. Much of the discussion turns away from the threat itself and toward the politicians who would lead that conversation. Some commenters also ask what citizens owe the country, and what the country owes them.
