Bystander kills gunman after Oregon school shooting leaves 4 dead
The first 911 call came at 12:59 p.m., after shots struck a car outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Officers arrived at 1:02. Reporter Chancellor Winn walks through those three minutes from FOX 35 Orlando's alert center, in a report that drew roughly 310,000 views in its first day.
Police say a 16-year-old gunman killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were in critical condition. Between the first call and the officers' arrival, dozens more calls reported an active shooter inside the school, which Winn says has between 400 and 450 students.
An armed bystander saw the teenager shoot through the school's locked doors. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, in a short clip, says the bystander "pursued him into the school and engaged him." Then: "Our officers entered the building and confirmed the suspect was dead." Winn reports that federal authorities credit the bystander with preventing further casualties.
The story is far from Orlando, but the comment section was about a hundred times busier than on the station's usual first day for a Short. Much of it concerns the bystander: many viewers call for him to be formally honored, and some point to what such a decision may cost him afterward.
Winn closes with what is still unanswered: a police briefing was scheduled for the following day on how the shooter got the shotgun.
