College football rankings would look different without a preseason head start. That is the thought experiment one viewer offers beneath Josh Pate's Week 7 AP poll reaction: wait until teams have several games behind them, then judge their résumés.

Pate's "AP Poll Week 7 Reaction...MOST Overrated & Underrated Teams - Josh Pate's College Football Show" drew an estimated 280,000 views in its first day, nearly six times his usual start. The comments were seven times busier than usual, and LSU's place in the rankings became a recurring question.

Viewers ask whether reputation and preseason expectations carry too much weight. Several question LSU's inclusion, while others make a case for giving Nebraska more respect or discuss Wake Forest's playoff potential. These are arguments about what a ranking should reward: results already earned, or an assessment of how good a team really is.

The poll discussion sits alongside Pate's broader Week 6 reaction show, which also drew an unusually large early audience. That partly sponsored episode covers Georgia's win over Alabama, Oklahoma's win over Texas and Kentucky's victory over LSU. His separate Georgia-Alabama reaction attracted a particularly busy discussion about physical play, missed opportunities and officiating.

Pate has since given the most persistent ranking question its own Short, asking whether LSU should still be ranked.

What viewers say

  • Imagine if there were no rankings until after week 5 and everyone has played at least four games and teams were primarily judged by their résumé's. Of course, it will never happen, but it's kind of fun to think about.
