A growing memorial now stands outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where three children and a teacher were killed when a gunman opened fire with a shotgun inside a special needs classroom.
Reporting from the school, Nancy Loo names the teacher as 25-year-old Megan Lambert. Her family appears on screen as the report identifies the first of those who died. Nearby, comfort dogs from Lutheran Church Charities move among children and neighbors who have come to leave flowers.
The segment then turns to the people who ended the attack. Caleb Giammanco, a father, stepped in to stop the shooter. Loo also recounts reports that another teacher threw her phone and tackled the gunman before he was stopped.
Kaylee Ahern, a student teacher at the school, speaks about Giammanco. "He's a true hero. Props to him for having the courage to do that and save other lives," she says. Asked how the school is coping, she pauses: "It's very hard. Um, yeah, I don't know the right words to say."
The Los Angeles station's report reached about 666,000 views in under a day, far beyond its usual first day, and the comments arrived around ten times faster than normal. Much of that conversation centers on the two adults who intervened.
