Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 196,275 views a day, 25 times a normal first day on this channel (7,924).
Oregon school shooter identified | WHAT WE KNOW
Three children and a teacher were killed at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, and KTVU FOX 2's short update focuses on the people who tried to stop it.
According to the report, the suspect fired at a driver before entering a classroom. A father of two students at the school took a gun from his vehicle and fatally shot the attacker. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz describes what happened inside the classroom before that: "A teacher in the classroom threw her cell phone at the suspect and then tackled him and fought to take the firearm from him." She was not hurt, he adds, "but she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed."
Police have since identified the suspect, a teenager. The report also shows a chalk message painted on the ground near the school: "WE ARE WITH YOU SILVER RAIL."
The Short reached roughly 200,000 views in its first day, about twenty-five times the station's usual start for its Shorts, and its comment section filled at a similar pace. Most of the comments are about the father and the teacher.
The segment's second half turns to Washington: Katie Zacharia leaving the White House press secretary role after five days. The Oakland station's coverage of the Norte Fire in Orange County, including a live stream from San Clemente, also drew well above its usual audience.
