NBC Chicago's report follows Cook County officials' call for solidarity and a federal hate-crime investigation into the alleged plot.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 40,764 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (3,276).

Raja Krishnamoorthi struggles to explain how he and his family escaped. Speaking at a press conference shown in NBC Chicago's report, the congressman recalls a gun jamming at the Balaji Hindu Temple in Aurora, where he had been worshipping.

"I don't know how my family and others escaped," he says.

Paris Schutz's report covers elected officials gathering in solidarity after the alleged mass shooting plot was thwarted. Officials credit a coworker with alerting authorities, and they call on FBI Director Kash Patel to investigate the case as a federal hate crime.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle puts the gathering's message plainly: "A house of worship should be a sanctuary."

The report drew roughly 41,000 views in its first day, more than twelve times NBC Chicago's usual start for Shorts. Its central testimony comes from a public official describing an experience he shared with other worshippers, then explaining why he wants to speak out.

Krishnamoorthi also argues that online hate speech fuels violence. Schutz closes with the possibility of congressional scrutiny of social media platforms that host it, extending the officials' response beyond the temple to the places where hateful messages circulate.
