"choker" gives Hayley Kiyoko's Coley a musical inner life

Her only new upload connects the album's fourth track to Coley's loneliness and longing for Sonya.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"choker" begins with a character's need to feel wanted. In the description of "track 4: "choker" from girls like girls the album #wlw," Hayley Kiyoko explains that the song grew from Coley's search for validation as she navigates loneliness and her yearning for Sonya. It's a small addition to the channel, but a specific window into the emotional thinking behind the album.

That was Kiyoko's only new upload this week, drawing roughly 2,500 views. After the upload break we covered in September, the emphasis has shifted from simply keeping the music playing to explaining a piece of it.

The Chelsea Cutler collaboration hasn't gone quiet, though. "hayley kiyoko - nobody should have you (feat. chelsea cutler) [official video]" remains the channel's busiest video right now. Kiyoko directed it, and its inclusion of bonus scenes from Girls Like Girls gives the duet another connection to the film beyond its place on the soundtrack's wider musical landscape.

Across the channel, the week brought about 7.4 million additional views, a substantial gain among nearby music channels: JohnMichaelHowell had a larger weekly increase, while Ren also drew millions. Kiyoko's subscriber count was unchanged, and her current daily viewing is at its usual level.

The new "choker" note offers something that those totals can't: a reason to hear the track through Coley's uncertainty, rather than as a love song in the abstract.
