Family reveals what happened moments before fatal Goliath roller coaster incident
Joshua Nelson says Goliath was one of Hassan Kariem's favorite rides, and he had been excited to ride it. In a new WSB-TV report, Nelson recounts the family's account of what happened before Kariem fell to his death at Six Flags Over Georgia.
Nelson, Kariem's brother-in-law, says Kariem appeared to lose consciousness before the fall. He also describes receiving a distressed phone call afterward and struggling to comprehend what he was hearing. The investigation into what happened on the roller coaster continues.
The report drew about 76,000 views in ten hours, already far beyond the station's usual full-day audience for a Short. It follows the station's earlier coverage of Kariem's death and the memories shared by people who knew him.
Reporter Ashlyn Webb also shows a Harry Potter-themed cake topper Kariem had made, a small example of the care his family remembers. Nelson says he wants accountability to prevent another accident, while holding onto the happiness Kariem felt before the ride.
"I do hope that he didn't feel any pain and the last thing that he can recall was that moment of happiness," Nelson says.
