A Reading mother killed at home, her son in custody in Vermont
WBZ's evening report on the Reading killing reached more viewers in seven hours than the station's regular videos usually gather in weeks.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 417,726 views a day, 105 times a normal first day on this channel (3,977).
Mother killed in Reading home, son taken into custody in Vermont
This report traveled far. WBZ's evening news segment on a killing in Reading, Massachusetts, passed 175,000 views seven hours after it was posted. A regular news video on this channel usually draws a few thousand views in its whole first day.
The report is short and plain. A woman was killed inside her home in Reading, a town north of Boston, and her 22-year-old son was taken into custody by Vermont State Police on Thursday.
The station followed the case through the day in several uploads. An earlier Short reported that the woman had been found dead and that her son had been named a person of interest. Its description asked anyone who saw him not to approach and to call 911. That Short also ran far ahead of the channel's usual. Reading police then gave a live update, and WBZ-TV's Tammy Mutasa reported on the arrest for the late newscast.
The comment section on the station's regular videos is usually close to silent. This one had more than two hundred comments within hours. Many offer condolences to the family, several mention that he was found in Vermont, and a number of viewers ask what is happening in Massachusetts.
The same stretch of news also brought the first governor's debate between Maura Healey and Mike Minogue, moderated by WBZ-TV's Jon Keller. The clips from that night drew a small fraction of the Reading report's audience.
