Georgia city's entire police force resigns after mayor dispute | FOX 5 News
Milner's police chief is resigning, and he still says he wants to fix things. "I want to, even still today, rebuild what's broken," Lamar Bunn says near the end of FOX 5 Atlanta's report on the small Lamar County city, where the entire full-time police department walked away at a single city council meeting.
The announcement came from City Manager Tausha Grose, who quit too. "The trust is gone. I have been rendered ineffective in my position," she tells the council, before adding, "with my extreme sorrow," that the full-time force has resigned.
Reporter Hernan Gutierrez lays out the disputes behind the walkout. Bunn says a tracker, bought with personal funds, was placed on his truck without the council or his supervisor approving it, and he calls it a violation of his Fourth Amendment rights. There were also arguments over overtime and over a policy on using city vehicles for part-time work.
Mayor Craig Timmons and Grose turned down interviews. At the meeting, Timmons says only that nothing about the situation satisfies him: "I hate to see it happen."
The clip runs under three minutes, and it passed a million views in little more than a day, a long way from the few thousand a Short from this station usually draws. The comment section moved even faster than the views. The most-liked comments say the report left them with more questions than answers, and many viewers trade guesses about which side of the dispute is hiding something.
Nobody leaves right away: the officers' last day is October 28, and Grose stays on until October 30.
