She thought she was protecting her money. Instead, a senior citizen in Paulding County handed over tens of thousands of dollars in a scam invoking the FDIC, she tells FOX 5 Atlanta.
"You trusted them that they were gonna protect your money," she says in Kevin Stewart's report.
The next demand, for another $35,000, brought an intervention. Her bank alerted her daughter, who coordinated with investigators to arrange a sting at a Chevron parking lot. The woman recounts the exchange and how detectives intercepted a suspect. The report says an arrest followed, with charges including theft by deception.
The segment drew roughly 60,000 views in its first eight hours, already far beyond the few thousand a regular FOX 5 Atlanta video usually receives on its first day.
Its most useful detail is the pause between the demand and the next handover: the bank contacted family, and family brought in police. In the report, Ashley Henson urges people facing pressure to send money to stop and contact relatives or law enforcement first. "And be patient, and call before you make a decision," Henson says.
