Fassbender and Vikander step into Hope's motion-capture world
Madman Films' behind-the-scenes featurette pairs performance-capture work with the mayhem of Na Hong-jin's creature thriller.
Why this story? The video is running at 54,063 views a day, 10 times its usual pace (5,256).
Hope - The Making Of - Part II
Michael Fassbender lets out an intense scream in motion-capture gear, and the crew applauds. It's a brief glimpse of the human performance behind Hope's effects, tucked between interviews, tracking equipment and explosive movie footage.
That glimpse is drawing fresh attention. Madman Films' "Hope - The Making Of - Part II," posted more than a month ago, added about 54,000 views in a day, roughly ten times its usual daily pace.
This is a promotional making-of featurette, not a full documentary. Fassbender calls the film something he hadn't seen before; Alicia Vikander explains her admiration for director Na Hong-jin while the footage shows her greeting him on the capture stage. Facial-capture tests share space with police shootouts and car chases.
Na directed the 2016 mystery-horror film The Wailing, another story in which a rural community confronts something frightening and difficult to understand. Hope's premise sends police and hunters searching for a mysterious creature around a remote South Korean village, only for the hunters to become the hunted.
The featurette offers a small look at how that world is built, rather than explaining its mysteries. Its most revealing contrast is between the finished film's destructive chaos and Fassbender, on a working stage, supplying a scream.
