John Morales and Steve MacLaughlin explain a Category 2 Isaias to South Florida

NBC 6's other storm video, about local first responders packing up to help farther north, drew nearly as big a crowd.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 43,805 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (3,455).

The forecast points north. Isaias, which came ashore in the news as the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, is aimed at the northern Gulf Coast. Landfall was expected in the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama or southern Mississippi late Friday or early Saturday, a long way from Miami. South Florida still wanted to hear about it from its own forecasters.

In "Isaias strengthens into Category 2 hurricane," NBC 6 meteorologist Steve MacLaughlin and John Morales, whom the description calls the station's hurricane expert, walk through the storm's latest jump in strength. Six hours after it went up, the video had about 17,000 views. A regular-length NBC 6 video usually needs its whole first day to reach a fraction of that.

The station's second Isaias piece came close behind, and it tells the other half of the story. Adam Berg and Julia Bagg report on South Florida first responders getting ready to head north, a region that knows hurricanes sending people to help where this one is expected. Beside those two, the rest of the day's uploads drew small crowds: Governor Ron DeSantis's news conference in Miami, a new poll on inflation and the cost of living, and a separate report on evacuations and school closures.

The comment section is short but busy. A few viewers guess the storm will reach Category 3 before it lands. The longest thread under the video is not about the forecast at all but about home insurance, and what the word "hurricane" means for the deductibles Florida homeowners pay.

NBC 6 bills itself as a station that has covered South Florida for more than 70 years, and this time its biggest job is explaining a storm headed for somebody else's coast.
