Watching the surf churn before a hurricane is something of a Gulf Coast habit, and Sheriff Chip Simmons knows it. Standing on Pensacola Beach under double red flags, he told NBC 6's Guamay Martell exactly why this time should be different. "We know it's a little bit of a tradition, but it's not worth your lives."

His argument was practical. Pensacola Beach sits on a barrier island reached by bridges, and those bridges shut once sustained winds reach 40 mph. "Wrap it up, start getting out of here," Simmons said, warning that anyone still on the island at that point would be stuck. He also described the beach's water utilities being turned off in the afternoon.

The Miami station's report drew about 76,000 views in its first 11 hours, far beyond a usual start for one of its regular videos. Its comment section was busier than usual too. Many viewers asked why roads to the coast were not simply closed and when bridge closures would be announced. Others pointed out that the warning was delivered on the very sand it was clearing.

In the studio, meteorologist Adam Berg brought the update that had changed since the day before. Isaias, a Category 2 in NBC 6's forecast as we reported here, had "reached Category 3 status," the season's first, with landfall expected "probably just shy of midnight." The channel's later upload confirms the storm came ashore along the Gulf Coast that night.

The hurricane shared a crowded news day with two other fast starters: a Short on the powerful earthquake in Panama, and an Avianca flight from Colombia diverted to Miami after severe turbulence sent eight people to the hospital.
