Shoes, tsunamis and "great deniability" in Tom Cruise's Digger

The final trailer for Alejandro G. Iñárritu's satire is drawing a late crowd after the film's release, with John Goodman's president handing the cleanup to the man who caused the mess.

Why this story? The video is running at 22,337 views a day, 15 times its usual pace (1,459).

"With great power comes great deniability," reads one of the title cards in Legendary's final trailer for Digger, and Tom Cruise's Digger Rockwell seems to take it as a job description. He opens the trailer on a private plane, inviting viewers to picture themselves as one of those people who believe "Digger Rockwell is Satan himself." Soon after, an explosion at his rig has set off tsunamis, and the death toll in the briefing room runs to the hundreds of thousands.

Posted in September, the trailer is having its busiest stretch now, nearly two weeks after the film reached theaters on October 2. It is drawing around fifteen times its usual daily views. Are these people who have seen the film coming back for another look, or the curious who have not gone yet? The comment section has both.

Iñárritu, billed on screen as the director of Birdman and The Revenant, plays the catastrophe for satire. An assembly pelts Digger with shoes. John Goodman's president settles on a plan: "Now, Digger here got us into this mess, and Digger's gonna dig us out." Officials in a bunker stare at something enormous under the water, Sandra Hüller's character advises "Double down," and Digger tells an angry crowd what happens if he stops drilling: "You starve, you freeze to death!" Riz Ahmed plays his aide, with Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons also in the cast.

Much of the talk is about Cruise's look. Several viewers call it his biggest transformation since Les Grossman, the foul-mouthed studio boss he played in Tropic Thunder, while others see a resemblance to Bob Odenkirk. One viewer who saw the film with their family writes that the trailers do not capture it, comparing its stylized sets and dry humor to Wes Anderson.

And a sizable group in the comments is asking Legendary for something else entirely: a trailer for its next Godzilla x Kong film.
