A boy's "Mom" gives Mike Flanagan's Exorcist trailer its last chill
Scarlett Johansson plays a New York detective pulled back into a satanic killer's case, and viewers keep replaying the final exchange.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,513,411 views a day, 449 times a normal first day on this channel (5,597).
The Exorcist: Martyrs | Official Trailer
The trailer saves its coldest moment for the end. At home, a boy asks, "What is it, Mom?" Scarlett Johansson's character answers, "I'd appreciate if you didn't call me that." Beneath the video, that line is among the most liked things viewers have picked out.
"The Exorcist: Martyrs | Official Trailer" passed three million views in a little over a day. Its comment section also filled far faster than anything the channel's short clips usually see. It arrived the same day Universal's other horror release, Other Mommy, opened in theaters.
Johansson plays Julie Miller, the detective who ended the reign of a satanic serial killer called Father Sunday thirteen years earlier. Now a new killer has written her name in an altar boy's blood in a church crypt. The trailer opens with a descent into that crypt. Later, in a dark church, Miller tells a priest, "H.H. Holmes, America's first serial killer, said he was possessed by Satan," and adds that "all of them claimed to be possessed." The priest replies with the Gospel line "My name is Legion," and a voice finishes it: "For we are many."
The cast is deep. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday's last confession, Sasha Calle is a rookie detective, and Diane Lane plays Miller's mother. Jacobi Jupe plays her son Max, Laurence Fishburne a revered priest, and John Leguizamo is Father Sunday himself. Mike Flanagan wrote and directed it. He has stepped into a famous horror world before: his Doctor Sleep continued Stephen King's The Shining. Jason Blum, whose Get Out clips sit on the same channel this week, is among the producers. The release date on the title card is March 12.
The comments are specific. Many viewers point to the dull yellow, '90s crime-thriller look, with Se7en named more than once. Others see The Exorcist III in it rather than the 1973 original. Some admit the franchise has had an uneven run lately, then say Flanagan's name is enough to make them hopeful.
